The Canary Islands, due to their geographical situation and their climatic conditions, have exceptional conditions for the life and reproduction of this very particular species. Coming from the African continent, the first camels were introduced in the easternmost islands and later, extended to the rest of the islands. In their origin, they were used for the accomplishment of labors of the field and as transport of goods or people. With the development of the industry and the mechanical means the physical work with these animals decreased until practically their disappearance.
Tourism and its capacity to adapt have managed to provide a new way of life for camels in the Canary Islands. At present its use is mainly for tourism, although its milk production is gaining importance, because camel’s milk is a product with a high nutritional value rich in insulin.
It’s an animal of strong constitution and medium size, its height is usually greater than the length of its trunk and has a resistant neck and back. There are specimens with uniformity of color in the trunk, degraded to the ends and legs, becoming white the latter. Other known layers are ash, white or pigeon; black; ruano; vermilion or dark red; sloe, jandrino or dark cinnamon; and yellow.
